Care Instructions After Tongue Tie Release

There is no specific care required following the tongue-tie release procedure. Your baby can feed normally right after the procedure. However, here are a few things to keep in mind to ensure smooth healing:

  • Feeding: If breastfeeding, you may notice an immediate improvement in your baby’s latch and feeding. It’s normal if the baby is a bit fussy or seems uncomfortable during the first few feeds, as they adjust to the new range of tongue movement. If bottle-feeding, ensure the baby latches properly onto the bottle nipple.
  • Healing: Occasionally, a small white or yellowish area may appear under the tongue where the release was done. This is part of the natural healing process and is not an infection. It may look like a small ulcer or patch and commonly resolves on its own within two weeks.
  • Pain and Discomfort: Your baby may show mild discomfort for a day or two after the infant tongue tie treatment in Melbourne. You can offer comfort through gentle feeding, cuddling, or using over-the-counter infant pain relief if necessary. Always consult with your doctor before giving any medication.
  • Movement Exercises: While not always required, your healthcare provider may recommend gentle tongue exercises or stretches to prevent the tongue from reattaching to the floor of the mouth. If given, follow the instructions closely, as this can help ensure the release heals correctly and doesn’t affect future tongue movement.
  • Watch for Signs of Concern: While complications are rare, keep an eye out for the following:
    • Excessive bleeding that doesn’t stop with gentle pressure
    • Signs of infection such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge
    • A noticeable decrease in feeding or significant weight loss

If any of these occur, or if you’re unsure about your baby’s healing progress, contact Dr Hajoona.
